Body Plan 10: Spinal Cord and Vertebral Column Flashcards
Spinous Process
A spinal bone that sticks out
How many vertebrae are in the spine?
33
How many dermatomes, myotomes & spinal nerves?
31
How many somites?
35
What are the vertebrae divisions?
7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral sarcum, 4 coccygeal
What are the spinal nerve divisions
8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sarcal sercum, 1 coccygeal
Where do the cervical spinal nerves come out relative to the vertebrae divisions?
Above the respective vertebral section (C8 comes out under the 7th vertebra)
Where do the non-cervical spinal nerves come out relative to the vertebrae divisions?
Under the respective vertebral section
What happens when C2 is injured?
Respiratory failure
What happens when C4-C7 is injured?
quadriplegia
What happens when T2-T9 is injured?
paraplegia
What happens when T12 is injured?
paralysis of rectum and bladder; anesthesia of buttocks, back of thighs, soles of feet
On average, where does the spinal cord stop?
L2
Dermatome
Area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve or spinal cord level
Myotome
Portion of skeletal muscle(s) innervated by a single spinal nerve or spinal cord level
Meninges
The three layers that surround the spinal cord and brain: Dura mater, archanoid mater, pia mater
Subarachnoid space
Cerebrospinal fluid inside the meninges, between pia mater and arachnoid mater
Arachnoid mater
In between the pia mater and dura mater
Epidural space
Immediately surrounding dura mater
Conus medullaris
the taper end of the spinal cord at the caudal end
Filum terminale
condensation of pia mater down the vertebral column
