9.1: Most cell division results in genetically identical daughter cells Flashcards
cell division
reproduction of cells, only one part of the cell cycle
Cell cycle
the life of a cell and how it divides
How is DNA distributed in cell division?
Cell division can consist of the distribution of identical genetic material/DNA into 2 identical daughter cells
Genome
All the DNA/chromosomes in a cell, DNA in a genome varies in number depending on the type of cell
Chromosomes
packets of DNA
Chromatin
DNA and protein, only found in eukaryotes, are in this state before they coil into chromosomes
Somatic cells, what are the number of chromosomes
also known as body cells, they are diploid(2sets)/non-reproductive cells, have 2 sets of chromosomes=46
Gametes, what are the number of chromosomes
also known as sex cells, they are haploid(1set)/reproductive cells: sperms 23 and eggs 23, have one set of chromosomes
what must happen to the DNA before the cell divides
The DNA is replicated and chromatins become chromosomes
sister chromatids
each duplicated chromosome has these and is joined copies of the original chromosome, become chromosomes when they split
centromere
where 2 chromatids are most closely attached, like staples, and where the kinetochores lye
What are the 2 phases of the cell reproduction
Mitosis and cytokinesis
Mitosis
the first part, the division of genetic material or DNA in the nucleus, can cause growth and repair
Cytokinesis
the second part, the division of the cytoplasm/enzyme-rich stew
what is the mitosis for gametes
meiosis makes 2 nonidentical daughter cells as opposed to mitosis
