6.2: The free-energy change of a reaction tells us whether or not the reaction occurs spontaneously Flashcards
Free energy(G)
the portion of a system/cell’s energy that can perform work when the temperature and pressure are the uniforms throughout the system
ΔG
the difference between the free energy of the final state and the free energy of the initial state
How does the amount of free energy impact the stability of the cell
higher free energy means that the cell is more unstable but has higher work capacity, this cell would then lose free energy in order to become more stable but lower work capacity
What does a negative free -ΔG mean
negative means it loses free energy, positive is vice versa
Exergonic reaction
energy is released occur spontaneously, release free energy
Endergonic reaction
energy is required, absorbs free energy
Explain equilibrium in cells
cells are never at equilibrium and require a constant flow of energy
