Verbs + ING Flashcards
Some verbs can be followed by object+ING or Possessive+ING. Possessive+ING is more formal.
Resent, recall, detest, (dis) approve, (dis)like, hate, love, object to, forget, imagine, remember, think of.
Possessive are only for people or group of people. Not for animals or things.
I resented Tom winning the prize.
formal: I resented Tom’s winning the prize.
Mia recalled him buying the book.
formal: Mia recalled his buying the book.
I remembered the horse winning the race.
Some verbs can be followed by TO+ING, where TO is the preposition.
Confess, object to, adapt, adjust, admit, look forward, own up, resort.
These verbs can be followed by TO+NOUN phrase.
She confessed to stealing the money.
You don’t object to working late tonight, do you?
She confessed to the crime.
You don’t object to the work, do you?
Other verbs can be followed by different preposition+ING.
BY+ING: begin, close, end, finish (off/up), open, start (off/out).
ON+ING: concentrate, count, depend, focus, rely, insist.
OF+ING: approve, hear, know, speak, talk, tell.
OBJECT+FROM+ING: deter, discourage, keep, prevent, prohibit, stop.
Can you begin by cleaning the floor, then do the windows?
Clared insisted on (Jack) wearing a suit for the party.
Have you ever heard of getting arrested for gossiping before?
The noise from next door prevented me from sleeping.
Some verbs can be followed by object+ING or INFINITIVE:
Feel, hear, notice, observe, overhear, watch.
The meaning is different when followed by ING or INFINITIVE.
I saw them playing football from my window. (action in progress).
I saw him smash the bottle. (action finished)
After the verbs DARE and HELP we can use Infinitive or TO+INFINITIVE.
I was angry with him, but I didn’t dare (to)say anything.
After HAVE, LET and MAKE, we can use INFINITIVE but NOT TO+INFINITIVE.
His exam results might make him work harder.
I had Irene clean up her bedroom before I let her go out to play.
