A, AN and One Flashcards
Use A before words begin with consonant sound. If the word starts with a vowel letter but the sound of a consonat, use A.
A university, a European, a one-parent family.
Use AN before words that start with vowel, including H.
Use AN with abbreviations starting with the letters:
A, E,F, H, I, L M, N, O, R, S, X.
An orange, an Italian, an umbrella, an hour, an honor.
An MP, an FBI, an IOU, an OPEC.
BUT a NATO, a FIFA.
A history book, an historic novel.
Use A or An to an unspecified person, or event.
Use A/AN in number and quantity expressions.
Use A…OF with possessives:
She’s a colleague of mine.
I really need a cup of coffee.
You never see a police officer in this part of the town.
Three times a year, half an hour, a day or so.
a few, a little.
that’s a friend of Gabriel’s.
With singular countable noun ONE, A or An refer to one thing.
Use ONE to emphasize that there is only one thing.
Use ONE with the expression ONE…OTHER/ANOTHER.
Use ONE with the expressions: One day, one evening, one spring.
We’ll be in Australia for one year. (for a year).
Do you want one sandwich or two?
Are you staying only one night?
Close one eye and then the other.
Bees carry pollen from one place to another.
