Some adverbs of manner (how things are done) are formed as ADJECTIVE+LY.

Some adjectives already ends in LY: cowardly, elderly, friendly, kindly, lively, lonely, lovely. With these adjectives, we use a prepositional phrase with the nouns: fashion, manner, or way.

He smiled at me in a friendly way.
She waved her hands in a lively fashion.

Most adjectives ended in ED, don’t have adverb, so we use the prepositional phrase or a noun, instead.

A

They rose to greet me in a subdued manner. (not subduedly).

She looked at me in amazement. (not amazedly).

Exceptions:
Unexpectedly, agitatedly, allegedly, deservedly, determinedly, disappointedly, excitedly, hurriedly, pointedly, repeatedly, reportedly, reputedly, supposedly, worriedly.

A

The storm was unexpected.
The weather turned unexpectedly stormy.

Some adverbs have two forms, one ended in LY and other not. The one ended in LY is more correct, and must be used if the adverb comes before the verb:
Quickly, cheaply, cleanly, clearly, finely, loudly, thinly, slowly.

A

She ran quick/quickly towards the door.
She quickly ran towards the door.

Some adverbs have different meaning if ended in LY:
free=for no money
freely=willingly.
late=not on time
lately=recently
deep= a long way
deeply=very
direct=without stopping
directly=very soon
flatly=definitely/completed.
highly=high standards
justly=rightly
mostly=usually
shortly=soon
wide=completely
widely=in many places.
