We use A/AN to say a job:
a doctor.

When we say a person unique job position, we use THE or zero article.

We use zero article after the expressions:
the position of, the role of, the post of.

She wants to be a journalist.

She was pointed as head of the company.

Dr. Simon has taken the position of Head of Department.

When we talk about a family as a whole.
