Reporting order, sugestions... Flashcards
Some verbs can follow a TO+INFINITIVE, without an object:
Propose, agree, demand, guarantee, offer, promise, swear, threaten, volunteer.
“The theater will be built next to the town hall.” They propose to build the theater next the town hall. (not they propose them to build…)
Object+TO INFINITIVE CLAUSE:
Encourage, advise, ask, call on, command, instruct, invite, order, persuade, recommend, remind, request, urge, warn, tell.
You should take the job, Fran.
She encouraged Fran to take the job.
After some verbs, can use THAT clause or TO+INFINITIVE clause:
Promise, agree, demand, expect, guarantee, hope, propose, request, vow.
He promised to arrive on time.
OR He promised that he would arrive on time.
After some verbs use a THAT clause but not a TO+INFINITIVE clause:
Insist, order, say, suggest.
There were cheers when he suggested that we went home early. (not suggested to go).
Some verbs need an OBJECT+THAT CLAUSE OR TO+INFINITIVE CLAUSE:
Advise, order.
I advised that she should accept.
OR I advised her to accept.
NOT I advise to accept.
Some verbs use TO+INFINITIVE but NOT THAT CLAUSE:
Intend, long, offer, refuse, volunteer, want.
Carol intends to return to Dublin.
NOT Carol intends that she should return.
Some verbs used in reporting can be followed by ING or THAT clause:
Advise, propose, recommend, suggest.
The lecturer recommended reading some books before the exam.
