Some modal verbs change in reporting:
Will, can, may: would, could, might.
Shall: Would (talk about future) OR SHOULD (Offers, advises).
Must (necessity): must or have to (speaking).
Must (conclude): Must
Musn’t : Musn’t.

A

“She may have already left.” He thought she might have already left.
“Careful! You’ll fall through the ice.” I warned him he would fall through the ice.
“I’ll be in Paris at Christmas.” She tells me she will be in Paris at Christmas.
“I shall call you tomorrow.” She told me she would call me tomorrow.
“Where shall I put this box?” He asked where he should put the box.

“You’re not allowed to smoke here.” He told me that I mustn’t smoke here.
“My advice is to look for a new job now.” She said that I should look for a new job now.
