Unit 4.8 - The Ear Flashcards
What is involved in the outer ear?
The pinna (cartilage that collects sound waves), ear canal, and tympanic membrane which is the ear drum.
What is involved in the middle ear?
It involves the auditory ossicles. This is the malleus (hammer), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup).
What is involved in the inner ear?
It involves the cochlea (spiral shell), basilar membrane, hair cells, and the auditory nerve.
What is the frequency theory?
A higher frequency results in the hairs wiggling faster.
What is the place theory?
Hairs along the cochlea are more sentence to certain pitches. Base of cochlea = lower frequencies. Apex of cochlea = higher frequencies.
What is the vestibular sense?
This sense is responsible for balance. The oval windows contain fluid and hair cells that vibrate as the fluid move around. The vestibular nerve carries this vestibular information to the brain.
What is proprioception?
It is the perception of body position. It receives information from vestibular system, muscles, tendon, joints, etc.
What is kinesthesia?
It senses body movement. Input from vestibular sense and proprioception and muscles tendons and joints.
