What is cognitive psychology about?
Decision making, thought processing, problem solving, and interpretations and assumptions.
Who were the psychologists involved in the science component of cognitive psychology?
Jean Piaget and Noam Chomsky.
What did Jean Piaget do?
She studied children’s cognitive development and problem solving, understanding ideas, and believed everyone had made schemes/schemas that can change overtime (categories - a veggie becoming a fruit).
What did Noam Chomsky study?
Studied language development and thought, and looked into animals vs. humans (symbols and gesture process)
Who were the psychologists involved in the research component of cognitive psychology?
Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck.
What did Albert Ellis do? What does it stand for?
He promoted REBT - Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy.
What did REBT do? Provide an example.
It is replacing irrational beliefs with rational thoughts. It involves looking at thoughts, emotions, behaviour. ex. I will fail …. Have I tried a new technique?
What did Aaron Beck do?
He made cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and the cognitive triad.
What is CBT?
Adjusting cognitive assumptions.
What is the cognitive triad?
People are negative about 3 domains. Themselves, their future, and the world. People have to look at the positive side.
What are the three components to mindfulness?
- awareness
- acceptance (not burying it, have to move past it)
- presence
