3.7 - Endocrine System Flashcards
What are the two systems involved in the peripheral system?
Somatic and autonomic.
What does the autonomic system have?
It is involuntary and it includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic system
What is the sympathetic system?
It creates high arousal, alert, muscle tension, stops digestive, heart rate increases, and produced fight or flight.
What is the parasympathetic system?
It makes you calm and relaxed, digestion, and slows heart rate, and it is overall a restorative process.
What is the somatic system like? What is included in it?
It is more voluntary and we are conscious of it. It includes sensory (input) and motor neurons (output).
What is the endocrine system?
It has glands that secrete and produce hormones.
What does the pituitary gland do?
It receives orders from the hypothalamus, produces endorphins (pain suppressors), hGH (human growth hormone), and most other hormones.
What does the pineal gland do?
It produces melatonin, which is involved in circadian rhythm.
What does the thyroid do?
Responsible for metabolism, appetite, and growth.
What does the adrenal glands do?
Aldosterone and cortisol.
What does the pancreas release?
Releases insulin and glucagon, involved in digestion.
What do the two sex glands do?
Testes - produces testosterone
Ovaries - estrogen and progesterone
What does cortisol do?
Cortisol is involved long-term stress, anxiety, and arousal. It connects to sympathetic system as you are more alert.
What does oxytocin do?
Involved in pleasure, hugs, kisses, cuddles, and social bonding.
What does estrogen do?
It is involved in emotional responses, fertility and low levels connected to schizophrenia.
