Unit 4.6 - Visual Illusions Flashcards
What are perceptual illusions?
Brain interprets things that are not real or true to be there.
What is are ambiguous images?
One figure cancels another one out. Target figure or background. Lots of info in image so focus on one, forget the other; lean towards what you want to see.
What is figure and ground?
Focus on one; vase or two faces.
What is impossible figures?
3D shape of cube. Completeness assumption.
What are closure images?
Involved in Gestalt psychology; focus on whole rather than parts. Talks about top-down vs. bottom-up psychology. Example would be seeing a diamond in a square even though it has no defined lines.
What is top-down processing?
Brain makes conclusion of what to expect and to find what we are expecting.
What is bottom-up processing?
Using previous experiences and knowing what something is and telling our brain that.
What is included in colour illusions?
Relative feedback, contextual cues (background), and shadow illusions.
What is included in sizing illusions?
Depth illusions, relative placement, height in field of vision, lines.
What is included in sizing distortions?
Depth illusions, relative placement, height in field of vision, and lines.
What is included in movement illusions?
Focal points, peripheral vision, and contrasts.
