Unit 3.6 - Brain Mapping Flashcards
What was present before 1920’s and before?
What was present 1960’s and 1970’s?
What was present 1990’s and beyond?
Ablation and EEG.
MRI, CT Scan, and PET Scan
fMRI, DTI
What is ablation?
It is the removal and dissection of the brain. Includes cutting, freezing, and laser.
What is an EEG?
It is an electroencephalogram. It shows electrical impulses and good at temporal resolution, but poor spatial resolution. Have to wear a cap and read the waves.
What is CT scan?
It is a computerized tomography. It is a series of x-rays that quickly generate the structures of the brain and spot abnormalities. It cannot denote differences between grey and white matter?
What is a PET scan?
It is positron emission emission tomography, which injects a radioactive substance in bloodstream known as tracer to show activity in within the structures of the brain. People suffering from depression and dementia do not have it light up.
What is an MRI?
It is magnetic resonance imaging that uses magnets and radio waves to create detailed brain images and show the structures.
What is fMRI?
It is a functional magnetic resonance imaging. It uses blood flow to show usage and measures O2 levels of the brain. Good spatial, poor temporal resolution.
What is DTI?
Diffusion tensor imaging traces water and shows connections in brain. It has good spatial and temporal resolution. Shows the circuits of the brain.
