Unit 4.7 - Sound Waves (Hearing) Flashcards
What is the frequency of the sound wave?
It is how often it crests.
What is the wavelength of the sound wave?
It is the stretch of the wave.
What is the amplitude of the sound wave?
It is the height of the crest.
What is the volume of a sound?
It is the pitch. Associated with amplitude.
What is the purity of a sound wave?
It is the different wave lengths.
What is the timbre of a sound wave?
It is the individual, pure sound wave. Lots of overlapping means different timbres.
What is the pitch?
The pitch is the frequency. It is measured in the Hertz.
How much of the pitch can humans can hear?
20 to 20 000 Hz. It declines with age. Other species can hear higher pitch (frequencies).
What is the volume?
The volume is the amplitude. It measures loudness in decibals. It is logarithmic; it goes up in a non-linear rate.
What is the timbre?
It is the purity of a sound. Involves tone/resonance. Different instruments playing same pitch/volume can still have the same timbre.
