Unit 2.7 - Correlations and Predictions Flashcards
What is included in correlations?
The bivariate (two variables) distribution and scatter plot, and there are two axis.
What is the x and y axis in a graph now?
The x axis is the predictor variable while the y axis is the outcome variable.
What does the correlation coefficient or direction mean?
If y is decreasing, it is negative, if y is increasing it is positive.
What is Pearson’s r?
Measures the squish and spread of dots, which show the strength of the correlation.
What does a Pearson’s r of 0 mean? What does a Pearson’s r of +1 and -1 mean?
0 means there is a weak correlation. The dots on the graph are random and not together. A +1 means that there is a strong correlation and it is going up, a -1 also means a strong correlation but it is going down on graph.
What are the two correlation rules?
Not for individuals, it is for groups. Not for causation (cause and effect), only for description. and correlation
What is inferential statistics?
It explains the numbers found and estimate if it is a representation of the population. Can make predictions and evaluates probability.
What is descriptive statistics?
Describes the numbers found DOES NOT MAKE GUESSES ABOUT POPULATION.
What is probability?
It is the chances of the score occurring.
What is statistical significance?
It is the differences between two groups, interested in a small overlap between curves. Interested in the probability that differences exist because of chance or because of manipulation of independent variables.
How is reporting done?
APA formatting, grammar (short sentences), headers, page numbers, tables and figures, and language (third person, political correctness).
