Unit 2 - Oxytocin, prolactin, and ADH Flashcards
What is the function of prolactin?
it stimulates lactogenesis in secretory alveolar cells
What increases the secretion of prolactin from the pituitary?
prolactin releasing hormone
What stimulates the release of prolactin?
high levels of estrogen and suckling by neonates
What is the function of oxytocin?
it triggers milk ejection by stimulating the contraction of myoepithelial cells
What increases oxytocin concentrations?
the contraction of the uterus, stretching of the cervix, and suckling
What is galactorrhea?
the spontaneous secretion of milky fluid from the breasts of males (or females)
What is can cause galactorrhea?
hypothyroidism causes the increase of TRH which increases the secretion of prolactin
Aside from stimulation of lactogenesis, what are other functions of prolactin?
mother love hormone -stimulates maternal behavior and pair bonding
What is another function of prolactin in amphibians?
larval growth and osmoregulation in amphibians
What is another function of prolactin in birds?
photostimulation induced premigratory fattening in birds
Aside from triggering milk ejection, what are other functions of oxytocin?
facilitates the contraction of uterin myometrial cells during labor, stimulates the secretion of uterine prostaglandin F2-alpha, stimulates the contraction of smooth muscles of reproductive organs during copulation, maternal behavior and pair bonding, can stimulate ADH receptors
What is ADH?
a nanopeptide known as antidiuretic hormone
What is ADH secreted by?
the posterior pituitary
What does ADH do?
inhibits diuresis and controlls blood volume and pressure
By which cellular mechanisms does ADH achieve its physiologic effect?
ADH uses cAMP to increase water reabsorption by stimulating incorporation of aquaporins into the collecting ducts of the kidney
