Unit 2 - Growth Hormone Flashcards
What is the chemical name of growth hormone?
somatotropin
What is the chemical nature of growth hormone?
it is a 191 amino acid long protein
What gland secretes growth hormone?
the anterior pituitary
Aside from the anterior pituitary, what other tissue is capable of secreting growth hormone?
mammary glands in cats, dogs and humans
What are the two main functions of growth hormone?
it indirectly promotes growth and directly mobilizes fuels during starvation
What is the indirect action of growth hormone also known as?
anabolic action
How does growth hormone work on promoting growth?
GH stimulates the liver to secrete IGF-1 which then stimulates growth
What specifically does IGF-1 stimulate?
lipogenesis, protein synthesis, cell multiplication, cell enlargement, and the deposition of the extracellular matrix
Explain anti-insulin GH actions.
growth hormone enhances lipolysis by adipose tissues and muscle by reducing insulin sensitivity; insulin does the opposite
What is the end-result of anti-insulin GH actions?
increased blood glucose concentration
What are gigantism and acromegaly?
hypersomatotropism - excess secretion of growth hormone
What factor decides whether gigantism or acromegaly will occur?
whether or not the physes have closed
If the physes have not closed will gigantism or acromegaly occur?
gigantism
If the physes have closed, will gigantism or acromegaly occur?
acromegaly
What is pituitary dwarfism?
congenital hyposomatotropism
