transport in plants Flashcards
2.53, 2.54 & 2.55
what does the transport system in plants enable?
- leaves to receive water for photosynthesis
- mineral ions needed to convert products of photosynthesis into useful substances
what is the xylem made up of?
- thick walled dead cells which contain no cytoplasm
- completely hollow
- arranged end to end
what forms the plant organ system for the transport of substances around the plant?
roots, stem and leaves
how are the xylem and phloem arranged?
in groups called vascular bundles
what does the xylem transport?
water and mineral ions from the roots to the leaves
what does xylems cell wall contain?
lignin
lignin is…
waterproof
what mineral ions does xylem transport?
nitrate ions and magnesium ions
what does the phloem transport?
food materials (mainly sucrose and amino acids) from photosynthesising leaves to non- photosynthesising regions in the roots and stem
what are the cells like in the phloem?
living and not hollow
how do substances move in the phloem?
from cell to cell through pores in the end walls of each cell
xylem is always on the inside or outside?
inside
phloem is always on the inside or the outside?
outside
what are phloem’s cell wall made out of?
cellulose
what is translocation?
moving sucrose and amino acids around the plant
