the reflex arc Flashcards
2.9
what are reflexes?
automated actions which do not involve the brain
which 3 neurones do reflexes involve?
- sensory
- relay
- motot
what is a reflex arc?
the movement of the impulse from receptor to effector
what is the reflex response also known as?
the involuntary response
how does the reflex response protect the body from harm?
responses are automatic and rapid
what is the first step to the reflex arc?
the stimulus is detected by receptors in the skin and sends an impulse along the sensory neurone
what is the 2nd step to the reflex arc?
a sensory neurone sends electrical impulses to the spinal cord
what is the 3rd step to the reflex arc?
an electrical impulse is passed to a relay neurone in the spinal cord
what is the 4th step to the reflex arc?
a relay neurone synapses with a motor neurone and passes the impulse through the spinal cord to a motor neurone
what is the 5th step to the reflex arc?
a motor neurone carries the impulse to an effector
what is the 6th step to the reflex arc?
when stimulated by the motor neurone, the effector will contract and move (the body part) away from the stimulus
in the reflex arc is the brain involved?
- an impulse is sent to the brain
- the brain is not involved in coordinating the response
what neurone connects the sensory and motor neurones together?
the relay neurones
what do sensory neurones do in the reflex arc?
carry impulses from sense organs to the CNS
where are relay neurones found?
inside the CNS
