RNA structure Flashcards
3.17
what is RNA a type of?
nucleic acid
what is RNA?
ribonucleic acid
what are the RNA nucleotides joined to form?
a single strand
what are the nucleotides joined by?
a covalent bond
where is the covalent bond in the RNA?
between the sugar of one nucleotide and the phosphate of the next
how does RNA differ from DNA?
RNA is single stranded- DNA is double stranded
RNA has a sugar called ribose- DNA has a sugar called deoxyribose
RNA has the base uracil (u) while DNA has the base thymine (t)
what is mRNA?
messenger RNA
where is mRNA formed?
in the nucleus of the cell
what process does it copy the sequence of bases of a section of DNA in?
transcription
what code does mRNA carry?
the code for building a specific protein from the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm
what is tRNA?
transfer RNA
where is tRNA found?
in the cytoplasm
what is translation?
tRNA picks up specific amino acids from the cytoplasm and brings them into position on the surface of a ribosome where they can be joined together in a specific order to make a specific protein
what type of nucleotide is RNA?
polynucleotide
