CHD Flashcards
2.67
what do the coronary arteries do?
- supply the heart muscle with blood
- this blood provides the glucose & oxygen needed for aerobic respiration & removes the CO2 produced by aerobic respiration
what will happen if you have a lot of saturated fats in your diet?
fatty deposits will build up in the artery walls
what do fatty deposits do?
narrow the lumen (space) of the artery
why are narrow lumens a problem for the coronary arteries?
it restricts blood flow to the heart muscle cells
what do the fatty deposits cause the heart muscles do?
the heart muscle cells receive less blood
if the heart muscle cells receive less blood, what does this mean in terms of oxygen and glucose?
- the heart muscle cells receive less oxygen and glucose for aerobic respiration
if aerobic respiration reduces what happens?
- anaerobic respiration increases in the heart muscle cells
- lactic acid will build up
what happens if lactic acid builds up in the heart muscle cells due to the increase in anaerobic respiration?
- poisoning the heart muscle cells
- causing heart attacks
what risk factors are there that make CHD more likely?
- diet
- smoking
- high blood pressure
- obesity
- lack of exercise
how can diet be a risk factor for CHD?
eating lots of saturated fat increases blood cholesterol and increases the risk of fatty deposits
how can smoking be a risk factor for CHD?
increases blood pressure and increases the risk of fatty deposits forming
how can high blood pressure be a risk factor for CHD?
- damages the artery lining
- increases the risk of fatty deposits forming
- high salt levels in your diet increase the risk of high blood pressure
how can obesity be a risk factor for CHD?
being obese will increase blood pressure and may be linked to poor diet
how can lack of exercise be a risk factor for CHD?
causes high blood pressure
