the heart Flashcards
2.65 & 2.66
how many chambers is the heart divided into?
4
what are features of the 2 atria?
- at the top of the heart
- thin muscular walls
what are features of the 2 ventricles?
- below the atria
- thicker muscular walls
where does the oxygenated blood come from?
the lungs
where does the oxygenated blood enter into the heart?
the left side of the heart
where does the oxygenated blood go?
to the rest of the body
which ventricle has a thicker muscular wall and why?
the left ventricle because it has to pump blood at a higher pressure around the whole body
where does deoxygenated blood enter the heart?
right side of the heart
where is the deoxygenated blood pumped to?
the lungs
what separates the 2 sides of the heart?
the septum
why do the 2 sides of the heart contract and relax at the same time?
so they can pump blood
what happens to the atria when blood needs to be pumped?
contract, emptying blood into the ventricles
what happens to the ventricles once the atria has emptied blood into them?
ventricles then contract, pushing blood into the arteries
what do valves do?
prevent the backflow of blood and they close to ensure blood flows in the right direction
