TABLE 08 - Immunodeficiency Flashcards
Allows cancer and bacterial, viral, fungal, and protozoan diseases; caused by HIV infection (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
Affects about 1 in 700; causes frequent mucosal infections; specific cause uncertain (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Selective IgA immunodeficiency
Frequent viral and bacterial infections; second most common immune deficiency affecting about 1 in 70,000; inherited (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Common variable hypogammaglobulinemia
Usually fatal in early infancy; very rare; inherited; bone marrow transplant a possible treatment (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Reticular dysgenesis
Affects about 1 in 100,000; allows severe infections; inherited; treated with bone marrow and fetal thymus transplants, gene therapy treatment is promising (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)
Absence of cell-mediated immunity; due to the failure of the thymus to develop in embryo (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Thymic aplasia (DiGeorge syndrome)
Frequent infections by viruses, fungi, protozoa; causes eczema, defective blood clotting; usually causes death in childhood (Immunodeficiency disorders)
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome
Frequent extracellular bacterial infections; affects about 1 in 200,000; the first immunodeficiency disorder recognized (Immunodeficiency disorders)
X-linked infantile agammaglobulinemia
