What is inspected during a 5 year equipment survey?
Also known as a continuous survey, 20% of the equipment is inspected every year.
The equipment that is covered over the 5 years are:
- M/E
- D/G
- Compressors
- Pressure vessels
- Electrical distribution
- Shafts
- Steering gear
- Pumps
What would they look at on the MOB launching arrangements?
Referring to MGN 71
- Proof test,
- Dynamic load test,
- Quick release hook inspections, testing of release off load,
- Emergency release on load.
- Types of brakes on winching arrangement, centrifugal brake
to slow descent and a weighted friction brake
On a 5 year hull survey would the shaft come out?
It is upto the surveyor but normally yes
What are the cutlass bearing clearances?
5% of the shaft diameter
What are the rudder bump clearances?
For a new build it can be 1.5mm, A vessel in service is allowed upto 6mm, after this the bush shall be renewed
How would you test a ship side valve without removing?
Start with a visual inspection, looking for a signs of damage or wear.
Check the valves functionality by opening and closing the valve several times.
Seal the valves inlet and outlet and perform a hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure test, monitoring for any drops in pressure.
Carry out a non destructive test by using dye penetrant to identify any cracks.
What is the surveyor looking for in a load line survey?
- Verifying documents ( Stability book and Certificates)
- Vessels freeboard
- Vessels load line markings
- Vessel water integrity ( Watertight doors, hatches and compartments)
- Freeing port shutters
- Ventilation and pipework
- Ship structure
Is a load line survey conducted by class or flag?
Classification
