Construction Flashcards
Bulkhead types full description of all?
A-60, can last 60mins - ER
B-30 can last 30 mins - Accommodation
C-15 can last 15mins
Collusion bulkhead - 5 to 8% of the LBP. 12% thicker
Aft peak bulkhead is watertight
Draw a thrust bearing?
See one note
How would you measure the crankshaft end float?
End float refers to the amount of axial movement of the crankshaft within the engine block
- Shut down engine
- Clean area
- Mount dial indicator and zero
- Apply axial force in both directions
- Record measurements
- Calculate the differences
- Verify with operating manual
Does the crankshaft run directly on the bearing?
No, it will have a thin oil film between the to metals
Why is thrust clearance important?
- Prevents mechanical damage
- Maintain alignment
- Reduce vibration
- Maintains oil film
What is the difference between a water tight and weather tight door? Where would you expect to find them?
Watertight doors are designed to prevent the passage of water in both directions, ensuring no water can enter or escape through the door when closed.
Found below deck and on bulkheads
Weathertight doors are designed to prevent the ingress of water in normal weather conditions, such as rain, waves, and spray.
Found above deck
What is the difference between an A class bulkhead and A60 bulkhead?
An A class bulkhead is a type of fire-resisting bulkhead designed to prevent the passage of fire and smoke for a specified period.
An A60 bulkhead is a specific type of A class bulkhead with enhanced fire resistance capabilities as it can withstand fire and smoke for 60mins
O/B valve material construction?
Aluminium bronze due to its high strength, wear resistance and good corrosion resistance
Hull material and carbon contents or steel?
Low carbon steel, up to 0.30% carbon
Cast iron contents and its properties?
- Iron
- Carbon
- Silicon
- Maganese
- Sulfur
- Phosphorus
