Air Compressor Flashcards
How would you troubleshoot a compressor?
- Check power
- Check air filter
- Check oil level
- Inspect belt
- Check pressure switch and relief valve
- Check for air leaks
- Test run
- Refer to owner manual
3 types of compressor?
- Reciprocating Compressor
- Rotary Screw
- Multi stage
Air compressor safety devices?
- Relief valve
- Intercooler drain
- Intercooler bursting disk
- Pressure gauge
- Fusible plug
- Thermal overload
- Em stop
What safety devices are on an air cooler air compressor?
- Intercooler drain
- Intercooler bursting disk
- Fusible plug
What are fusible plugs?
A plug that when exposed to high temperatures will melt, cause a hole in the pipework and dump the contents to the bilge, removing any risk of the air receiver exploding.
Working knowledge of relief valves on air reservoirs? Why are they fitted?
Relief valves are designed to respond to changes in pressure within the air reservoir. They contain a spring-loaded mechanism that is calibrated to open when the pressure reaches a specific threshold.
How many starts available from air start reservoirs?
A minimum of 12 starts
How does the air drier work?
Water is also passed through intercoolers to cool the compressed air between stages. These also allow the air to condense and run away as free water to the
drains which are operated regularly
Air receiver safeties?
- Pressure relief valve
- Pressure gauge
- Drain valve
Why do air receivers vent to atmosphere and not into ER?
So in the event of a fire, 300lts of 13 - 28 bar does not assist the fire
Unloader valve, what would happen if it wasn’t there?
To release the pressure trapped in the compressor head and discharge line when the compressor stops, allowing for an easier restart. Without the unloader this will increase the starting torque, leading to motor overloads and reduced life of the compressor
Why are drains and oil/water separators important?
- Prevent moisture building up throughout the system
- Prevent corrosion within the system
- Preventing damage downstream
- Remove oil from the system
- Reducing fire risk
Danger of oil in air start lines?
- Fire/ Explosion risk
- Blocked lines
- Sticking air start valves
Leaking air start valve, causing explosion risk?
This can lead to poor combustion as the air/ fuel ratio is incorrect. Or even during combustion the flame may be able to travel back past the air start valve and cause an explosion or fire further up the system.
