Free surface effect, what is it? How does it effect the vessel? What does it do and how does it effect the stability?
A
Free surface is when liquid is able to move from side to side. This movement of mass can cause the vessel to list over greater and potentially too far, causing the vessel to capsize. It makes the stability of the vessel bad.
The main cause is fuel and cargo tanks that are half full. This leaving a large area for the fluid to move within the tank.

Be able to draw the diagram showing centre of buoyancy, centre of gravity and the metacentre. Understand GM and what happens in COG moves above M? Explain the effect of increasing and decreasing GM?
