How often would you overhaul?
Onboard Moonsand our PMS for the main engines are 9 years or 15,000hrs. This has been taken from the manufactures manual.
Or you may bring this earlier if your oil test results are finding large amounts of wear particles
Or you have some sort of failure that requires an overhaul
What is required of an overhaul?
Cylinder heads:
Overhaul cylinder heads. Visually inspect piston crowns and wear pattern on cylinder liner running surfaces.
Component maintenance:
- Drain coolant and flush cooling systems
- Inspect rocker arms and valve bridge for wear. Insert an endoscope through the pushrod bore to visually inspect swing followers and camshaft running surfaces
- Clean air ducting
- Clean intercooler and inspect for leakage
- Fit new high-pressure fuel sensor
- Check engine coolant thermostat and fit new thermal actuator
- Inspect centrifugal oil filter for wear
- Overhaul starter
- Clean engine coolant cooler and inspect it for leaks
- Clean engine oil cooler and inspect it for leaks
- Check operation of diverter valve
- Fit new seals/sealing materials for all disassembled components
- Overhaul engine coolant pump
Would you use OEM Spares, What information would you add to the NOX technical file?
Our company policy is OEM parts only and it is something I prefer. If any part that contributes to the combustion process has been changed, then it will need to be added.

- Piston rings
- Cylinder linear
- Piston crown
- Gudgen pins
- Crosshead bearings ( Large 2 stroke)
- Bottom end bearings
- Camshaft bearings
- Crankshaft bearings
- Valves
- Valve seats
- Gaskets and seals
- Injectors
- Air/ Fuel/ Oil filters
- Oil and Coolant
What is a technical file?
A record of every part that contributes to the combustion process on an engine has to be added to the technical file, this ensuring the vessel is staying NOx compliant
