What is the history, reasoning and objective of ISM?
Created by the IMO to help reduce major shipping incidents such and such as the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise in 1987 and the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989.
Sets an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships. Companies must document and implement clear procedures, standards and instructions.
Its Two Primary Objectives are:
- Ensure safety at sea
- Avoid damage to marine environment and property
What are the two ISM Sections?
Part A - Objectives and Functional Requirements
Part B - Implementation
What are the associated certificates and surveys to ensure compliance?
DOC - Document of Compliance
SMC - Safety Management Certificate
Annual and Intermediate surveys for verification
Internal and external audits
Define risk analysis?
It is a process of identifying, assessing, and evaluating potential risks, threats, or hazards associated with a particular activity. It involves analyzing the likelihood and consequences of various risks to determine their potential impact on objectives and outcomes.
What is your role as C/E?
I am responsible for ensure my department implement the SMS onboard.
I ensure we are compliant and if not a non-conformity/ defect has been produced
Ensuring that the engineering department is safe and following the correct safety precautions
Completing the correct risk assessments for the task at hand
Ensuring all equipment is maintained and ready for in an emergency
Ensuring all documentation and record keeping is upto date and being completed
Participating in ways to continuously improve our SMS

How does ISM relate to the engine veering department?
- That we are following the vessels SMS
- We are following the correct operating procedures
