What is the history, reasoning and objective behind the MLC?

A

Maritime Labour Convention, established in 2006

Concerns about the working and living conditions of seafarers, as well as the need to address labor-related issues in the maritime industry.

The MLC establishes minimum standards for seafarers’ working and living conditions, including provisions related to wages, hours of work and rest, employment contracts, accommodation, food and catering, medical care, and social security.

What are the required working hours and conditions?

A

At least 10hrs rest in 24hrs which cant be divided more than 2 periods and one must be 6hrs

77hrs rest over 7 days

They have all the same rules as crew, they just have to be assigned a experienced officer to act as a mentor

How to deal with a complaint from an engine room crew member? is there an SMS procedure?

A

The crew member shall complain verbally or written to either their HOD, Safety Officer, Captain or DPA. Then following our SMS complaints procedure it will complete an initial assessment. Depending on the seriousness of the complaint will depend on the outcome, a chat, a warning, sack

What does a safe manning document cover?

A

Official certificate issued by the flag state administration that specifies the minimum number and qualifications of crew required to safely operate a vessel.

Why/when would 2 engineers not be enough?

A
  • Watch keeping for underway voyages as 2 engineers would struggle to cover 12hrs each a day
  • A vessel over a certain KW or GT due to the amount of machinery can not be covered by 2 engineers.
