Emergency Generator Flashcards
How do we test it and what tests do we do?
Onboard we have the ability to simulate a blackout. This will open the tie breaker from the emergency and main switchboard, batteries will take the load for upto 45seconds and then the emergency generator will take over the load on the emergency switchboard.
Synchronisation
Emergency stop
What make, model and output do you have installed onboard?
1 x Zenoro (John Deere) 6068AFM85 with LSAM 46.3 S2 106 kW / 132 kVA
What does it supply and why?
It supplies the minimal equipment that will allow us to stay safe and keep the vessel safe, equipment such as:
- Hi fog
- Emergency Fire Pump
- Bilge Pump
- Emergency Lighting
- Navigational lights
- Fire alarms
- Rescue crane
- Water tight doors
- Auxiliary steering gear
- Bridge navigational equipment
- Fuel transfer pump 2
- Start battery chargers M/E and D/G
- Emergency air compressor
- Trailing pump
- Fire dampers
- ER Ventilation
- Telescopic mast
Emergency battery testing?
Visual inspections for any leaks and ensure they are clean. apply vaseline to the terminals to help protect.
Using a load tester to apply a controlled load to the battery and measure voltage response, discharge rate, and overall performance.
What are the SOLAS Requirements?
Generator must be fitted behind the collision bulkhead in its own ventilated compartment with its own firefighting suppression.
Have their own fuel supply to last at least 18hrs on load
The emergency generator must be online within 45 seconds of a blackout
How long should it run for?
In an emergency it has to last 18hrs
On our two weekly test it is for 30mins, ensuring it has no problems when at operating temperature and pressure
How long should emergency lighting last for?
36hrs for passanger ships
18hrs for cargo ships
What happens electrically when you drop out the tie breaker?
When the tie breaker between the main and emergency switchboard drops, the batteries will take the load, if power hasn’t be restored within 45secs then the emergency generator will fire up and supply power to the emergency switchboard. Our system is then smart enough to then close the tie breaker automatically when power is being read on the main switchboard and then transfer the load across
