CO2 Flashcards

1
Q

Explain testing, maintenance on CO2?

A
  • Visual inspection, looking at cylinders, pipework, nozzles, valves and control devices. Looking for damage, corrosion or leaks.
  • Cylinder pressure checks to ensure they are within range

-Disconnect the bottles and perform an annual functioning test of release mechanisms and alarm system

  • Leak detection if losing pressure
  • Hydrostatic testing of the cylinder bottles
  • Testing the pressure relief valve

Q

Describe the procedure for the activation of the ER Co2 system?

A
  • Account for all personnel
  • Close all doors and hatches and other openings to the machinery space
  • Close all dampers
  • Crash stop ventilation for that area
  • Switch off pumps
  • Quick closing valves shut (awareness of propulsion loss and bridge informed)
  • Masters permission
  • Release CO2
  • Wait as long as possible before reentering with a BA team and a gradual fall in temp has been recorded

Q

Pipes inside Co2 bottles? How do they work? Capillary tube?

A

Known as a dip tube. It draws liquid state CO2 from the bottom of the cylinder. This creating a siphon effect. As the liquid is expelled from the cylinder, it evaporates into a gas, this creating a pressure to push the remaining CO2 out of the cylinder.

This method removes any risk of gas discharge as it will be ineffective and inefficient.

Q

When to make a re-entry, procedure for re-entry?

A

Should be help off for as long as possible.
Temperatures should of gradually reduced
A BA team may enter and BA checks
Once confirmed the fire is out and no risk of re ignition, the compartment must be fully ventilated till oxygen at 20%

Q

Repairing the CO2 in dry docking, what would I do?

A

Isolate the system, then onto maintenance carried
out, regulations for changing flex hoses, servicing intervals and different types. noted about making sure system was not left isolated when coming out of dry dock, big sign up or something obvious as.
