Q

Run down of past experience?

A

Started a cadetship with BP in 2015, completing my EOOW. Oil industry crashed when I qualified and unfortunately laid off.

Found a job on a 40m motor yacht, was sole engineer for 4.5 years then moved onto a 64m Motor yacht for 8 months but Russia- Ukraine started and the vessel was Russian owned.

Joined my current vessel as 2nd engineer, have completed 15 months and now getting promoted to Chief Engineer.

Q

How do you make sure other engineers don’t miss part of a procedure?

A

I will show them on the onboard server where our step by step checklist is for the task. For their first time I will most likely go through the task with them. When I feel confident I will then leave them to complete the task themselves next time but enforce that the checklist shall be used.

A

The DPA is the Designated Person Ashore, it allows the vessel to have a point of call with someone in the company 24-7. The DPA will have direct communication with the highest personal within the company.

18
Q

How to prepare for a transatlantic crossing?

A

The C/E will need to start getting a voyage plan to then calculate what will be needed.

They information from the voyage plan would be:
- Length of voyage
- Speed of vessel
- Passages/ Canals, Water ways
- Time at anchor
- Ports enroute
- Availability of fuel and water

This information can be used to work out:
- Fuel required
- Lub oil required
- Water Required
- MARPOL Special Areas/ Restrictions
- Chemicals required
- Spare parts required
- PMS upcoming tasks
- Watchkeeping for hours of rest

19
Q

How do you calculate fuel consumptions with reserve?

A

Referring to the vessels fuel consumption table and the distance of the voyage.

By using speed= distance/time.

Then adding an additional 15% in safe fuel reserve.

20
Q

How many passengers can a yacht carry?

A

Onboard Moonsand we can have upto 10 guests but other yachts can have upto 12

21
Q

Outgoing Chief engineer, giving hand over to new C/E, what would you do? You have only 6 hours, are you happy about this? What would you do? Notify DPA about lack of
time.

A

Request a few handover notes to read over before joining the vessel so I have some questions already. I would not be happy about this as 6hrs will go very quickly by the time I have signed on to the vessel and completed paperwork. By the time I have then been given uniform, showered and eaten, had my ships familiarization we wouldnt have much time. I would do the best I can but would inform the captain that this isnt acceptable.

22
Q

Reporting injuries, who would you report to?

A

I would report to the safety/ medical officer onboard who is our 2nd officer. Depending on the type of injury we would then follow procedure and write up a incident/ accident report that can be sent off to mangement
