Spine (Vertebral Column) Flashcards
Why is the spine important?
It supports the movement and stabilization of the body
What is between each vertebra?
Intervertebral disk made of fibrocartilage
What role does the intrevertebral disk play?
Intervertebral disks are what allows the spine to move and absorb compression.
What are the five distinct regions in the spine?
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar, Sacral, Coccyx
What are the two primary types of spinal curves?
Kyphotic & Lordotic
What is a Kyphotic curve?
Refers to the anterior curve of the spine - Curve toward the front
What is a Lordotic curve?
Refers to the posterior curve of the spine - Curve towards the back
What type of curve does the cervical curvature have?
Lordotic
What type of curve does the thoracic curvature have?
Kyphotic
What type of curve does the lumbar curvature have?
Lordotic
What type of curve does the sacral curvature have?
Kyphotic
What are the names of the 4 spinal curvatures?
Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar & Sacral
What is the definition of a “ nautral spine”?
Neutral spine is the position of the spine in which minimal neuromuscular activity is required to maintain a standing relaxed posture
What is egronomics?
Egronomics is the applied science of how a person interacts with their envirioment
What is strength training?
Strength training or resistance training involves the performance of physical exercises which are designed to improve strength and endurance
What is flexibility training?
Flexibility training involves activities that aim to stretch your muscles until they’re loosened up, and your body becomes lithe and limber.
What is Spondylolithesis?
A slipped vertebra in relation to the one adjacent to it. Most commonly the vertebrae moves anteriorly. However, it can move laterlly and posteriorly.
What is Spinal Stenosis?
Narrowing of the spinal canal because of degeneration, instability, or a lesion. The spinal canal is a vertical hole within the vertebrae that allows the spinal cord to pass through it.
What is Radiculopathy?
Pain in the extremities (arms, hands and feet) that originates from compression of spinal nerves
What is Sciatica?
A type of radicular pain. Presetns with pain down the posterior and/or lateral aspect of the leg. Sciatica can manifest as a result of compression (i.e heriated disk, spondylolisthesis or muscle conraction)
What is kyphosis?
An extreme anterior curve in the spine i.e someone who is has a hunchback
What is Lordosis?
An extreme posterior curve in the spine i.e someone who has a swayback
What is Scoliosis?
Spinal curvatur in the frontal plane i.e lateral curvature, caused by leg length discrepency or growth abnormality
What is a herneiated disk?
Also know as a ruptured disk, occurs when the intervertebral disk is injured
What causes a herniated disk?
A herniated disk is cause when excessive stress placed on a disk causes the annulus fibrosis to crack and some of the nucleus pulposus leaks out and places pressure on the spinal cord or spinal nerves. This causes pain
