Ankel & Foot Complex Flashcards
What is the ankel bone called?
Talus Bone
What is the heel bone called?
Calcaneus Bone
What bones make up the midfoot?
Cuboid, Navicular, Cuneiform
What bones make up the forefoot?
Metatarsals, Phalanges (toes)
What is Sesamoiditis?
Sesamoiditis is an inflammation of the sesamoid bones in the ball of the foot and the tendons they are embedded in. It’s usually caused by overuse, especially by dancers, runners, and athletes who frequently bear weight on the balls of their feet.
What is the purpose of the Talocrural Joint?
It connects the Tibia and Fibula with the Talus bone in the foot. This is a hinge joint and provides dorsi and plantar flexion.
What is the purpose of the Subtalar Joint?
Connects the Talus bone and the Calcaneus bone. This ia a gliding joint and allows inversion and eversion of the ankle to occur. The Achilles tendon covers the subtalar joint when viewing the leg from a posterior aspect
What are the 4 major joints in the foot/ankle that affect gait and foot stability?
Midtarsal, Tarsometatarsal, Subtalar, Talocrural
Midtarsal Joint
This joint spans the arch of the foot and primarily controls inversion and eversion of the foot. This joint ranges from flexible to rigid based on what aspect of support and drive phase the foot is in.
What are three primary classifications of joints?
Fibrous, Cartilaginous, Synovial
