Module 7 - Terminology Flashcards
What does running economy relate to?
It relates to how efficient a runner is.
What factors influence running economy?
Calf muscle girth, bone length, running form, stride rate, and genetics
What is pronation?
Inward (medial) angle of the foot. It is normal during a proper gait pattern for the foot to pronate.
What is the role of foot pronation in walking and running?
Foot pronation helps the body absorb stress from the impact of running and walking
What is over-pronation?
Excessive pronation
What is supination (under pronation)?
Outward (lateral) angle of the foot This places the majority of the weight on the outside aspect of the foot. Essentially, supination is a lack of pronation.
During supination, what does the subtalar joint not do?
The subtalar joint does not flex.
What is heel-to-toe drop?
Difference in height between the heel and forefoot of a shoe
What is ground reaction force (GRF)
Based on Newton’s third law, GRF is the force exerted by the ground on a body in contact with it.
What is Spinal Engine Theory?
It proposes that the spine is the primary engine that makes us move.
What does coupled motion relate to?
It relates to a sequence of movements by different body parts to create an efficient and powerful movement.
What is dorsiflexion?
Pointing of the foot upward (flexion of ankle joint).
What is plantar flexion
Pointing of the foot downward (extension of ankle joint)
What does passive energy relate to?
This relates to energy being stored (potential energy) via the stretch of a muscle and connective tissue.
What does the Stretch-shortening cycle represent?
Representative of an eccentric contraction of a muscle followed by a rapid concentric contraction of the same muscle.
