Module 6 - Heart Rate Flashcards
What are the main benefits of using a HRM?
Athletes can tell how well recovered they are, can monitor their heart rate througout exersice sessions, can set HR zones, and help determine running pace.
What are the three primary metrics that typically correlate to not being recovered and rested?
Heart rate is slow to return to baseline after an effort. Abnormally high/low resting heart rate. Heart rate does not reach normal peak levels when putting out a corresponding effort.
What is Cardiac Drift?
It’s a natural increase or upward “drift” in heart rate while the overall intensity remains the same.
What are the two primary reasons for cardiac drift?
An increase in body temperature which raises the heart rate and/or a decrease in muscular efficiency due to fatigue
How is the resting heart rate assessment done?
This assessment is performed by taking one’s heart rate upon waking and before getting out of bed.
Is it true or false that a decrease in resting heart rate corresponds to an increase in stroke volume
True
A significantly low or high resting heart rate can indicate what?
fatigue and possibly, overtraining syndrome
Is it true or false that a decrease in resting heart rate corresponds to an increase in stroke volume
True
what does the recovery heart rate assesment measure?
It measures cardiovascular fitness and, more important, improvement.
How is the recovery heart rate assesment done?
An athlete’s recovery heart rate is assessed by having the individual get their heart rate up to a predetermined level, then ceasing activity. The recovery heart rate is represented by the number of beats the heart rate drops in one minute after cessation of exercise.
What is heart rate variability?
Heart rate variability (HRV) measures the differences in time between heartbeats
