Module 5 - Cold Weather Flashcards
What is hypothermia?
Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature.
What is normal body temperature?
36 - 37 degrees celcius
At what temperature does hypothermia start to occur?
Hypothermia occurs as your body temperature falls below 35 degrees
What are the stages of hypothermia?
Mild, moderate, and severe
What are the symptoms of mild hypothermia?
The most common visible symptom is shivering and cold or numb extremities due to the constriction of blood vessels
How can you treat mild hypothermia?
Moving to a warm area, taking off wet clothes, and putting on dry and adequate amounts of clothing
What are the symptoms of moderate hypothermia?
Excessive shivering, a loss of muscular coordination, and extremities ‒ including the lips and ears ‒ turning blue because of a lack of blood flow to these areas.
How can you treat moderate hypothermia?
An individual must be immediately moved to a warm area and changed into dry clothing. A warm hat is also suggested. Medical attention is required.
What happens in severe cases of hypothermia?
At this point, the body begins to shut down and is represented by the heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate, all declining substantially. Individuals will also likely have difficulty walking and talking, and their cognitive ability is typically compromised.
How can you temporarily treat severe hypothermia?
Move the individual to a warmer area, and call for medical help immediately
How can you prevent hypothermia?
Be aware of your environment, and weather forecast. Wear sweat-wicking clothing and dress in layers.
