Pelvis Flashcards
What is the primary purpose of the pelvis?
The primary purpose of the pelvis is to support the upper body and to transfer the energy from the legs to the spine and upper body.
What does the pelvis protect
The pelvis protects the reproductive and digestive organs of the lower torso
What are the 9 key ares of the pelvis?
Iliac Crest, Ilium, Ishium, Coccyx, Pubic Symphysis, Acetabulum, ASIS, Sacroiliac Joint, Sacrum
What is the Illiac Crest?
The most superior aspect of the ilium is called the Iliac Crest, which is also commonly used as an anatomical landmark term
Ilium
Located on either side of the sacrum, the Ilium is the largest bone in the pelvis. The primary purpose of the Ilium is to protect internal organs
What bone is the largest bone in the pelvis?
The Ilium
Ishium
Often referred to as the sits bone, the ishium bones are located where one’s body weigth is distributed in a seated position
Coccyx
Commonly referred to as the tailbone, the coccyx is the lowest part of the vertebral column
Pubic Symphysis
Connects the two sides of the lower pelvis. This joint is a semimovable joint and is connected by ligaments and cartilage.
Acetabulum
The location of the pelvis that the head of the femur sits in
Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS)
The ASIS is the forward most part of the pelvis
Sacoriliac Joint (SI Joint)
The SI Joint is the connection between the Sacrum and the Ilium, located on both sides of the spine
What stabilizes the SI Joint?
The SI Joint is stabilized by strong ligmants
What is the purpose of the SI Joint?
The purpose of the SI Joint is to absorb shock.
What can potentially cause inflamation in the SI joints?
Inflamation in the SI Joint can be caused by too much or too little motion and typically presnts with pain in the SI Joint and low back region
