Module 8 - Illness Flashcards
What is hyponatremia?
Electrolyte imbalance (i.e., sodium) where sodium levels are lower than normal. This can be a result of overhydration.
When does dehydration occur?
When the body takes in less fluid than it uses.
What is hypothermia?
When the body’s core temperature drops below what is necessary for body function and metabolism to take place at a normal rate.
What is a heat illness?
A range of heat-related illnesses that can range from fairly benign (e.g., cramps) to heat stroke, which can be fatal.
What are the 3 primary physiological responses that occur with being sick?
- The body breaks down muscles for energy
- fat metabolism decreases
- Aerobic metabolism is diminished
If an athlete is sick, is it advised to exercise during that period?
It is advised to take things easy and focus on getting better and avoiding moderate to hard exercises. Taking a break from exercising while sick is best.
