What is a slipped upper femoral epiphysis?
Where the head of the femur is displaced along with the growth plate
What is the typical patient with a SUFE?
Obese adolescent male who has recently undergone a growth spurt
When should SUFE be suspected?
When the pain is disproportionate to the trauma
What are the presenting symptoms of SUFE?
Hip, groin or thigh pain
Restricted range of hip movement (particularly internal rotation)
What are the risk factors for SUFE?
Male
Adolescent
Obesity
Hypothyroidism
Hypogonadism
Afro-carribean or hispanic
What investigation is used to diagnose SUFE?
Antero-lateral and frogs leg X-rays
What are the complications of SUFE?
Avascular necrosis
Chrondrolysis
SUFE of the contralateral hip
Persistent late deformity
