What is hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy?
Brain damage caused by antenatal or perinatal hypoxia

Permenant damage can cause cerebral palsy

Maternal shock

Poor feeding
Hyper alert
Irritable
What are the symptoms of moderate hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy?
Poor feeding
Lethargic
Hypotonic
Seizures
What are the symptoms of severe hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy?
Apnoeas
Flaccid
Reduced or absent reflexes
Reduced consciousness
What is involved in the management of hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy?
Fluid balance
Respiratory support
Anticonvulsant therapy
Electrolyte monitoring
Therapeutic hypothermia
What is therapeutic hypothermia?
The core temperature of the baby is reduced down to 34 degrees for 72 hours
