What is a febrile convulsion?
A seizure that occurs in a child as a cause of a high fever
What is a simple febrile convulsion?
1 seizure in the course of the illness
Less than 15 minutes in duration
Generalised tonic-clonic seizure
What is a complex febrile convulsion?
Focal seizures
More than 1 seizure during the illness
More than 15 minutes in duration
What are the differential diagnoses of febrile convulsions?
Epilepsy
Meningitis
Intracranial space occupying lesion
Syncopal episode
Electrolyte abnormalities
What is the management of a febrile convulsion?
Advise parents to phone an ambulance if a seizure lasts for more than 5 minutes
Identify and manage the underlying source of infection
Paracetamol and ibuprofen
