What is Osgood-Schlatter disease?
Inflammation at the tibial tuberosity where the patellar ligament inserts
What is the aetiology of Osgood-Schlatter disease?
Avulsion fractures (where bits of bone pull away with the ligament) occur at the tibial tuberosity, which causes growth of the tibial tuberosity
The lump of the tibial tuberosity is visible and is tender
What is the presentation of Osgood-Schlatter syndrome?
A hard visible lump on the tibial tuberosity
Pain in the anterior aspect of the knee
Pain exacerbated by physical activity
What is the initial management of Osgood-Schlatter disease?
Ice
Analgesia - NSAIDs
Reduction in physical activity
What is the epidemiology of Osgood-Schlatter disease?
More common in males
10-15 years
What is the prognosis of Osgood-Schlatter disease?
Symptoms will fully resolve over time, but the patient will be left with a permenant non-tender lump
