Paediatric Resuscitation Flashcards
What compression to ventilation ratio should be used when resuscitating children?
Lay rescuers - 30:2
Two or more rescuers - 15:2
What should be given before compressions are started when resuscitating children?
5 rescue breaths
What pulse is used to assess circulation in unresponsive children?
Femoral pulse
What rate of chest compressions should be used when resuscitating a child?
100-200bpm
Where should compressions be performed when resuscitating children?
Lower half of the sternum
What depth should compressions be performed to?
1/3 of the depth of the chest
What are the first steps of basic life support?
Check to see if responsive
Shout for help
Open airway
Look feel and listen for breathing
What head position should unresponsive children be put into?
Younger children - very slight extension of the neck
Older children - head tilt and jaw thrust
What are the principles of neonatal resuscitation?
Warm the baby
Calculate APGAR score
Stimulate breathing
Inflation breaths
Chest compressions
How are babies stimulated to breath in neonatal resuscitation?
Drying the baby vigorously
Place the baby’s head in a neutral position
Check for airway obstruction
When is the APGAR socre calculated?
1, 5 and 10 minutes after delivery
How are inflation breaths given to neonates?
Two cycles of 5 inflation breaths lasting 3 seconds each
Followed by:
- 30 seconds of inflation breaths if there is no response
When should compressions be given to neonates?
If heart rate remains below 60bpm despite inflation breaths
How are chest compressions performed with inflation breaths in neonates?
At a ratio of 3:1
