What is epiglottitis?
An infection of the supraglottis that can cause airway compromise due to inflammation and swelling
What organism typically causes epiglottitis?
Haemophilus influenzae B
Why is epiglottitis rare in this country?
HiB vaccine
What is the main risk factor for epiglottitis?
Not having had HiB vaccine
What are the symptoms of epiglottitis?
Difficulty breathing and swallowing
Tripod positioning
Drooling
Sore throat
Fever
What is the first line investigation in epiglottitis?
Laryngoscopy
What is the management of epiglottitis?
Direct larygoscopy and intubation
IV ceftriaxone or cefotaxime
What should not be done in a child with epiglottitis?
Anything to disturb or distress the child
- Separation of the child from the parent
- Establishing IV access
- Oral cavitiy exam
What should be given to a child with epiglottitis once stable?
Oral amoxicillin
What prophylactic treatment should be given to contacts of the child?
Rifampicin
