What is eczema?
A chronic atopic condition, caused by defects in the continuity of the skin barrier, leading to inflammation
What is the aetiology of eczema?
Tiny gaps in the skin’s barrier allows microbes, irritants and allergens in - these create an immune response
What is the epidemiology of eczema?
Present in 10-15% of children
Usually presents in infancy
What conditions is childhood eczema associated with?
Hayfever, allergies, asthma
What are the features of eczema?
Itchy, erythematous rash
Extensor surfaces affected in younger children
Flexor surfaces also affected in older children
Lichenification
Dry, flaky skin
What is the management of eczema?
Avoid irritants
Topical emolient
Topical corticosteroid
Wet wrap - thick emollient wrapped overnight
