What is peri-orbital cellulitis?
A skin infection of the tissues anterior to the orbital septum
What is the presentation of peri-orbital cellulitis?
Swollen eyelid
Fever
Red and hot skin around the eyelid
What are the risk factors for peri-orbital cellulitis?
Trauma
Infection in the surrounding area e.g sinusitis
What is the treatment of peri-orbital cellulitis?
Oral antibiotics
IV antibiotics if very unwell
What is orbital cellulitis?
An infection of the eye that involves the tissues behind the orbital septum
What is the presentation of orbital cellulitis?
Swollen, red, erythematous eyelid
Fever
Periocular pain
What differentiates orbital cellulitis from peri-orbital cellulitis?
Proptosis - bulging eyes
Chemosis - oedema of conjunctiva
Diplopia
Restricted eye movements
What investigations are used to diagnose orbital cellulitis?
CT orbit - gold standard
FBC, U&E, CRP
Blood culture
Swabs for culture
What is the management of orbital cellulitis?
IV antibiotics
Referral to ENT for potential surgical drainage if an abscess forms
