SI - Resistance to social influence Flashcards
what are the reasons people resist conformity?
social support and locus of control
for social support what factor means people do not conform?
if there are other people present who are not conforming
they do not have to be following the views of the person but the fact theyre not following the majority gives a person the confidence to follow their own beliefs, this persons is called an ally
what is the draw back of social support?
if the disseneter stops conforming so will the other person. The effect of the dissent is not long lasting
who proposed locus of control?
julian rotter - 1966
what are the two ends of the locus continuum
external locus and internal locus
what is an internal locus of control?
someone who believes their choices are free and they face the concquences of their own actions
what is an external control?
things happen to them without their control and they do not control their being
example of internal locus belief
they failed a test because they didnt work hard enough
example of external belif
tehy failed their driving test because the invidulator was harsh
are people only internal or external
not there is a continuim and people maybe both
is external or internal locus more likely to conform
external
why do internal resist social influence
- they tend to be more confident
- more achievement oreintated
– higher intelligence and less of aneded for social aporval
ALSO
- they believe theyre are the agents of their choices so have less of a need to follow others
WHAT WAS ALLEN AND LEVINES RESEARCH?
found that conformity decreased when there was one dissenter in an Asch type study, even when they wore thick glasses and said they were blind.
- this supports the idea that the dissenter just needs to be present to give them confidence to resist social influence
what was Gamsons research?
did a study like Milgram except they were in groups and found that there was less obedience
peer support is linked to obedience
who conducted research support for the social support theory?
- allen and levine
- gamson
